Costa Rica

Where the Jungle Meets the Sea —
and You Finally Exhale

Costa Rica

There's a moment in Costa Rica — usually somewhere between your second cup of locally grown coffee and the sound of howler monkeys echoing through the canopy — when your nervous system just… lets go. If you've been running on fumes, pushing through perimenopause, or simply forgetting what it feels like to be still, Costa Rica has a way of reminding you.

The country runs on a philosophy called Pura Vida — pure life. It's not a slogan; it's a genuine way of moving through the world. Slowly. Gratefully. Presently. For women over 40 who've spent decades putting everyone else first, that shift in pace can feel almost medicinal.

From the misty cloud forests of Monteverde to the black-sand beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula — one of the world's five Blue Zones — Costa Rica is a place where wellness isn't a trend. It's the terrain. Zip-lining through the rainforest, soaking in volcanic hot springs, or simply watching the Pacific swallow the sun at golden hour: every moment here feels like a full-body reset.

The resort I called home for this trip — the W Costa Rica – Reserva Conchal — made it almost impossible to leave. But more on that below.

The View from Your Room

I'm not exaggerating when I say I spent the first twenty minutes of check-in just standing at the window. The W Costa Rica – Reserva Conchal positions its rooms to face the Pacific, and at dusk, the sky turns every shade of blue imaginable — cobalt, indigo, slate, and finally a deep ink that bleeds into the ocean below. The hills of Guanacaste roll into the water like something out of a painting.

Lying on the bed with your feet up, watching the last light fade over the bay — that's not a luxury. That's medicine. After months of alarm clocks and deadlines, I genuinely didn't know what to do with that kind of stillness. It took a full day to stop waiting for something to interrupt it.

The Private Beach

Playa Conchal is named for the billions of crushed shells that make up its shoreline — a natural phenomenon that gives the sand a soft, pearlescent texture unlike any beach I've walked. The water is that particular shade of turquoise that makes you question whether you're in Costa Rica or the Caribbean.

Resort guests have access to a private stretch of beach with lounge chairs, umbrellas, and attentive beach service. It's the kind of setup where someone brings you a cold drink before you've even thought to ask for one. I spent hours out there — reading, floating, doing absolutely nothing — and felt zero guilt about any of it.

Wildlife That Comes to You

One of the things nobody warns you about Costa Rica is that the wildlife doesn't stay in the jungle — it comes to find you. I turned a corner in the hotel corridor and came face to face with a white-nosed coati, a raccoon-like creature with a long striped tail and absolutely zero concern for personal space. He looked at me, decided I was irrelevant, and continued on his way.

Howler monkeys wake you up at dawn from the treetops. Iguanas sun themselves on the pool deck. Scarlet macaws fly overhead in pairs. This is a place where the boundary between resort and rainforest is intentionally blurred — and once you stop being startled by it, it becomes one of the most magical things about being here.

The pools at the W Costa Rica Reserva Conchal are not an afterthought. They are a destination in themselves — sprawling infinity-edge sanctuaries surrounded by teak loungers, white-toweled cabanas, and the kind of blue water that makes you forget what day it is. But what sets them apart from every other luxury resort pool I have ever visited is the aquarobics program. Every morning, instructors lead water fitness classes right there in the pool — low-impact, high-energy, and genuinely fun in a way that makes you wonder why you ever did cardio on dry land. For women over 40, it is an ideal workout: easy on the joints, effective for the core, and set against a backdrop of howler monkeys in the canopy and the Pacific glittering in the distance. I showed up intending to watch for five minutes and stayed for the entire class. That is the W Costa Rica effect — it turns every intention into a full commitment.

Activities: Quad Riding Through the Jungle

If you're the kind of woman who likes her wellness with a side of adrenaline, the ATV tours through the Guanacaste dry forest are non-negotiable. Our group wound through narrow dirt trails beneath a canopy of bare-branched trees, kicking up red dust and laughing the entire time. I haven't felt that free in years.

The concierge team at the W handles all activity bookings — from quad tours and zip-lining to horseback riding and deep-sea fishing. They know the best operators, the safest guides, and exactly how to match the experience to what you're actually looking for. All you have to do is show up.

The Jungle Is Always Watching

I spotted this howler monkey on a guided nature walk through the resort's surrounding forest. He was completely unbothered — draped across a branch like he had nowhere to be and all day to get there. Honestly, a mood.

Costa Rica is home to over 500,000 species of wildlife — nearly 4% of all species on Earth packed into a country smaller than West Virginia. Walking through the forest here isn't just scenic; it's humbling. You realize very quickly that you are a guest in someone else's home, and that home is extraordinary.

Fine Dining & Five-Star Concierge Service

The dining at the W Reserva Conchal is genuinely exceptional. The open-air restaurant overlooks the Pacific, and on the evening I'm thinking of, the sun was setting directly behind the hills — a slow burn of orange and gold that turned the water to copper. I sat there with a glass of water and a full menu and thought: this is exactly where I'm supposed to be.

The food is locally sourced, beautifully plated, and deeply satisfying without being heavy — exactly what your body wants after a day of beach and jungle. But what elevates the entire stay is the concierge team. Five-star service here means they remember your name by day two, anticipate what you need before you ask, and make every request — no matter how specific — feel completely effortless. It's the kind of attention that makes you feel genuinely cared for, not just accommodated.

My first coffee after landing in Costa Rica. Pura Vida.

For women over 40, Costa Rica isn't just a vacation — it's a recalibration. The combination of clean food, warm water, and a culture that genuinely values rest makes it one of the most restorative destinations on the planet.

I came back different. Not in a dramatic, life-overhaul way — but in the quiet, cellular way that happens when your body finally gets what it needs. More sleep. Better food. Time in the water. Time in the silence. If you've been waiting for permission to go, consider this it.
